As part of our Secondary Book Week celebrations, the English Department had the privilege of hosting renowned author Ms Ameera Aslam, who brought the magic of poetry to life for our Year 9 and 10 students.

Ms Ameera is a best selling author, award-winning poet, translator, editor, and activist from Singapore. Her work has appeared in various publications locally and internationally.

The workshop was a resounding success, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with literature in a deeply personal and creative way.

During the visit, Ms Ameera conducted an interactive workshop focused on the art of writing poetry. Students were captivated as the author shared insights into the creative process, emphasizing the power of words and the importance of expressing one’s emotions through verse. The session was filled with practical tips, inspiring students to find their own voice and experiment with different poetic forms.

Ms Ameera also shared personal experiences and read some of their own poetry, which resonated deeply with the students. They discussed how poetry can be a tool for self-expression, reflection, and social commentary, encouraging students to explore these themes in their writing.

Students were given the chance to write their own poems during the workshop, with guidance and feedback from the author. The creativity and enthusiasm displayed by the students were truly commendable. Many of them discovered a newfound passion for poetry and expressed a desire to continue writing beyond the classroom.

The visit was a highlight of Book Week and left a lasting impression on both students and staff. It was not only an educational experience but also an inspirational one, fostering a deeper appreciation for literature and the power of the written word.
