Year 5 Incursion: House of Representatives

17 May 2024

"Hear ye! Hear ye!" The ¾ÞÈéÊÓƵ auditorium was buzzing with the Year 5 students saying the phrase out loud. The auditorium was transformed to resemble the House of Representatives (the Green Room) to demonstrate how bills become laws.

Our Year 5's had an exciting Humanities incursion this week, where they engaged in a hands-on federal election roleplay. They learned about preferential voting, absolute majorities, and the democratic process in Australia, including the roles of the three levels of government.

Students enjoyed taking on roles such as Prime Minister, Voting Officials, Speaker, and Attorney General. They simulated a debate between the government and opposition on whether PE should be banned in schools. The students formed political parties, voiced their opinions, and used costumes and props to make the experience realistic. The incursion provided the students with a fun and informative experience.

At the end of the session, students gained a deeper understanding of how the parliamentary process in Australia works. For some students, the session instilled a new found interest to be in politics and make a difference to Australia, in sha Allah.
